About
Me and my relationship with jet lag
Jet Lag Symptoms
Hi, my name is Chris. Long time ago I was a travel agent. Now I'm an
anthropologist, working in a management position for an international
development organization (an INGO). That takes me on regular business travel across the
globe -with a Platinum frequent flyer card.
I'm also a writer. And of course a
no-jet lag practitioner (rather than an expert).
During the first ten years or so of my frequent flights the first morning after
crossing six or more time zones I usually woke up with a banging headache. It
would keep me in bed for 24 hours, throwing up (excusez le môt) for
hours.
One day I introduced myself to the same person twice within a time span of two
hours: first on arrival in the hotel and then when we joined for dinner.
Embarrassing, huh?
Oh, and then the dinner: I had been asleep for a few hours. In the dining room
my head was spinning and I didn't know if I was supposed to order breakfast or
dinner. The thought
of food made my stomach protest.
That's extreme Jet lag, sir!
That went on for some ten years of long distance flying, until at
some point the headaches were gone and after a long flight I felt like a daisy
in a sunny meadow (sort of).
Hey, look: no more jet lag!
Behavior is the key
Why and how did that change? What had I done to cure or prevent jet lag?
In those days I had no clue about advertised jet lag cures based on melatonin,
light therapies, jet lag diets, self-hypnosis or meditation. Let alone
acupuncture to relief jet lag symptoms.
But analyzing what I do and don't do before, during and after the flight it
gradually dawned on me that the key to avoiding jet lag lies in behavior.
I began to talk about jet lag with colleagues and other travelers. And
discovered that the serious jet lag patient begins to suffer, although
unconsciously, even before boarding the plane.
The procedure
Travelers flying around the world without jet lag are indeed few and far
between. It is estimated that less than 20 percent of air travelers don't
experience jet lag symptoms. That leaves an awful lot of people whose faraway
trips are hampered by jet lag.
None of the no-jet lag suffering individuals I have talked to used any drugs,
gadgets, self hypnosis or meditation. That made me curious.
I found a few interesting similarities in how they travel. Similarities
that coincide with my personal anti-jet lag methodology.
I decided to write down my experience in No More Jet Lag after I
realized that very few of my co-workers travel without suffering from jet lag,
while I always get off the plane in mint condition and ready to roar.
I'm happy to share what I know through my book No More Jet Lag.
Just
to make sure
I'm not a doctor and I don't know
anything about medical stuff, other than what anyone can pick up from TV,
newspapers and the occasional magazine.
I don't even claim that my No More Jet Lag therapy is a therapy at all.
Essentially it's nothing more or less than a different form of behavior before,
during and after a long flight.
Jet lag prevention is a technique
After reading No More Jet Lag, when you apply it you should
notice an improvement in how you feel after your next long international flight.
And you will probably think "why did I not think of that before?"
Perfection comes with practice. After your first attempt at preventing jet lag,
the result may not be optimal, but after several long haul flights, you will arrive in better and better shape.
After several flights you will apply the technique automatically without giving
it any further thought.
Imagine what it will be like to step off the plane after a trip of more than 15
hours and not feel tired and dizzy.
Imagine yourself after disembarking, humming a tune, walking to the Immigration
booth and on to Customs, full of energy.
Other passengers may stagger off the plane and yawn, but you are strong and
vigorous.
Yes, this can be you. Absolutely. Even if you are facing another long haul
flight tomorrow.
